CASE STUDY: Marcia Batten – Inspirational teacher, speaker and author | Founder of Pass the Baton Enterprise

Why did you hire an editor for your book?

Firstly because I knew that I needed someone to proofread my book to check it for  grammatical errors, typos, sentence structure and so on. As a writer you never see the obvious mistakes as you are so busy trying to get your thoughts on paper.

But secondly, I also wanted someone who has editorial skills with the ability to read through a train of thought to see if it makes sense and then make suggestions, such as give suggestions on chapter titles and paragraph topics. I chose Mildred because I had used her taster service first and liked her style so I was very confident that she would tackle my project with care and dilligence.

What was Mildred like to work with?

In one word – “excellent”. She was professional at all times and any editorial changes were clearly communicated, especially where large bits of text were deleted completely. This can be a bit disconcerting for a first time author but Mildred was able to give her expert advice and very sound reasoning as to her decisions. Mildred had the ability to take my very raw copy and make it flow so that my message was more easily understood.

Would you recommend Mildred’s editing services?

Definitely! For the following reasons:

1) Her attention to detail, professionalism and ability to communicate her decisions so that they are understood;
2) Her editorial ability in suggesting alternatives to written text;
3) Her understanding – she suggested subject titles for different parts on my book which is proof that she understands what you are writing about;
4) Her marketing skills – it was Mildred’s suggestion to call my book “The Law of Self-Love”. I had another title which she advised would not work as it was too long and people would not connect with it – I’ve had such great feedback on my title since the book has been out which is fantastic.

2 Steps to Receiving From God by Omowunmi Olunloyo

“2 Steps to Receiving from God was my first book and I really did not have a clue what editing was about and really did not see the need for it as I thought my manuscript looked good the way it was. When I finally decided to give it to Mildred for editing, I was expectant to see what will happen to my work and I must say she did a great job with it and I really could not have done what she did. Initially I did not want to put subtitles in my book but Mildred added these and not only did it look much better, it was also a lot easier to read. Mildred really is great at what she does and I love what she’s done with my book and would be happy to recommend her services.” Omowunmi Olunloyo – Author, Motivational Speaker and Lifecoach

Rehearse your lines by Alison Bristow“I decided to hire an editor because it was my first time writing a book and I felt more confident knowing I had the expertise of a professional on board. Mildred was recommended to me by a number of people; working with her was amazing – she is extremely professional and very good at what she does. Handing over your first book to an editor is not easy but Mildred took the fear away and was really encouraging and supportive throughout the whole process. She never judged me or my work and the feedback she gave me each time was straight to the point. I particularly loved the way Mildred pulled out some of the most powerful and effective parts of my book to use as “pullout quotes” and I am extremely satisfied with the finished product. I have already recommended Mildred’s editing services to other people and will continue to do so!” Alison Bristow – Secondary School Teacher
